Across the river, at your own pace

Two ways to
feel at home.

Stay close to village life with a local host, or settle into the riverside gardens of La Folie Lodge.

Both are starting points for the same island: rice fields, shady paths, temples and evenings beside the Mekong. Choose the comfort and experience that suit you, then arrange your stay directly with your host.

01 / Stay with local hosts

A welcome
from the island.

Local homestays offer a simple base among the villages. Staying with island households brings you closer to everyday life and supports the people who welcome you.

Rooms and facilities vary. Speak with the hosts about the room, meals and arrangements that suit your visit.

02 / Stay at La Folie Lodge

Your own corner
of the Mekong.

Set among riverside gardens, La Folie Lodge offers bungalows and suites with space to slow down. A pool, restaurant and spa make it a comfortable base for exploring the island and the Champasak area.

Spend the morning on the village paths, return for lunch, and leave the afternoon open. For yoga, treatments or a longer retreat, ask the lodge about its current programme.

Rooms, current rates and reservations are handled directly by the lodge. Coordinate your arrival and confirm the transfers included in your booking with its team.

The journey is part of the visit

First the road.
Then the river.

Don Daeng lies in the Mekong, across from Champasak. Arrange the final crossing with your host before you travel, so the road journey and boat meet in the right place.

01

Reach the Champasak area.

From Pakse, continue by road towards your agreed boat departure point. Depending on your route, your host may direct you towards Champasak town or Ban Muang. Confirm the exact meeting location before setting off.

02

Arrange your crossing.

For a homestay, speak with Mr. Mee or Mr. Vieng about the boat. For La Folie Lodge, coordinate directly with the lodge team. Agree on the departure time, landing point and handling of your luggage.

03

Meet your island host.

Share your expected arrival time and keep the host’s number with you. River levels and landing conditions can change; follow the arrangements confirmed for your travel date.

Confirm the whole journey. Ask whether a boat quote is per person or per boat, one way or return. For a day visit, agree on the return crossing before leaving the mainland.

A few useful details

Before you
cross the river.

  • Cash & payment

Bring Lao kip for local purchases and services. Ask your accommodation which payment methods it accepts and settle the arrangements before arrival.

  • Your room & meals

Confirm the room type, bathroom, fan or air conditioning, breakfast and other meals. Facilities differ between homestays and the lodge.

  • Walking & cycling

Pack comfortable footwear, drinking water and sun protection. Ask your host about bicycle hire and suitable routes; paths can be sandy or affected by rain.

  • Connections & access

Check Wi-Fi and any specific access needs directly with your host. Describe the help you may need with boat boarding, steps or luggage before booking.

A little more to know.

Can I come just for the day?

Yes. Arrange your boat and return time in advance, then leave enough time for a village walk, a bicycle ride or a meal. An overnight stay gives you the evening and another morning on the island.

How much does a homestay or boat cost?

Ask the hosts for a current quote for your dates and party size. Confirm what the room rate includes, and whether the boat fare is per person or per boat and one way or return.

Can I book through the island website?

Accommodation reservations are made directly with the homestay hosts or La Folie Lodge. The island website’s general contact form is for enquiries, media and projects; it does not confirm a room booking.

Will the beach look like the photographs?

The riverbank changes with the Mekong’s water level. Wide stretches of sand and the exact landing arrangements are seasonal. Ask your host what to expect around your travel dates.

Once you are here

Leave room
for island life.

Walk the village paths, pause to listen for birds, or stop at Mr. Mee’s family-run restaurant for Lao cooking. Ask ahead about meals and his cooking class, offered in partnership with La Folie Lodge.

Keep the day unhurried. A shaded path, a conversation and an evening beside the river can be enough.
